Packers giving ex-Steelers, Bears wide receiver a tryout
The Green Bay Packers can be a land of opportunity for wide receivers. While it is difficult to amass a healthy target share, a true No. 1 has yet to emerge since Davante Adams’ departure. Romeo Doubs led the team in both receptions and receiving yards last season, but he signed with the New England Patriots in March. About a month later, The Pack traded Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. The door is now open for another player to emerge, or rather reemerge.
Green Bay is hosting Chase Claypool for a tryout at rookie minicamp, per Easton Butler of Packer Report. The 2020 second-round draft pick reached his peak with the Pittsburgh Steelers but also spent time with the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins. He has not played in an NFL game since the 2022-23 campaign.
The Packers have a solid trio of wideouts in Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Matthew Golden, with Savion Williams and Skyy Moore also on the depth chart, but there could be some upside to adding another big-bodied receiver who boasts undeniable athleticism. The question is, though, how much does Claypool have left to give?
The former Notre Dame star recorded 62 catches for 873 yards and nine touchdowns during his rookie season with the Steelers, but he never took the next step. Actually, he regressed. The Bears rolled the dice and traded a second-round draft pick for Claypool in November of 2022. He posted only 18 receptions for the franchise before being dealt to the Miami Dolphins.
The Buffalo Bills are the most recent team to gamble on the 6-foot-4 Canadian’s physical gifts. It would have been interesting to see what Claypool could have done with Josh Allen, but he tore a ligament and tendon in his toe before anyone could find out. Now, he has unfinished business in the NFL.
Perhaps the Packers will allow him to settle it. Green Bay obviously wants to surround quarterback Jordan Love with as many viable pass-catchers as possible. If Chase Claypool can stay healthy and locked-in, he could potentially squeeze into the roster and earn reps in Matt LaFleur’s offense.
Bears fans would seethe if this man experienced success in dairy country.
