Oilers’ Connor McDavid ties Mario Lemieux, Gordie Howe in NHL history with latest scoring feat
The NHL regular season is over, which means the first of the second-end awards have been handed out. Oilers captain Connor McDavid picked up four assists on Thursday, ending the season with 138 points and winning his sixth Art Ross Trophy. That ties him with legends Mario Lemieux and Gordie Howe for the second-most scoring titles in NHL history.

Like most NHL records, Wayne Gretzky owns the most scoring titles in league history with ten. McDavid is nearly two-thirds of the way there before turning 30, which is unprecedented in recent NHL history. This year, he scored 48 goals and notched a league-high 98 assists to get to 138. That beat Tampa Bay Lightning winger Nikita Kucherov by eight points.
McDavid is one of the greatest players in recent NHL history. He is one of nine men to win three Hart Trophies as league MVP, and has a great case to win his fourth this year. He also has a Rocket Richard Trophy for most goals in a season in his trophy case. But missing is the Stanley Cup, despite consecutive close calls and losses to the Florida Panthers. McDavid also won MVP of the Olympics this year, despite Team Canada’s loss to Team USA in overtime of the Gold Medal Game.
With his four assists on Thursday, McDavid ran his career points total up to 1,220 in his 794th NHL game. That puts him 47th on the all-time list, less than 100 behind Anze Kopitar, who is in 38th. It could be a quick rise up the board over the next few years for McDavid.
The Oilers have a different matchup in the first round this year, playing the Anaheim Ducks after five consecutive seasons playing the Los Angeles Kings. They have home-ice advantage in that set, but won’t if they have to play a rejuvenated Vegas Golden Knights team in the second round.
