Ex-first-rounder Isaiah Simmons among Panthers’ final roster cut casualties

It’s been a roller coaster of a career for Isaiah Simmons, as the linebacker-safety hybrid just hasn’t quite found a home in the NFL. After playing five games for the Carolina Panthers last season and fighting for a spot on the roster this year, his time with the club came to an end on Sunday.

Reports indicate that the 28-year-old defender was released by Carolina, according to Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. Simmons is currently entering the 2026-27 campaign as a free agent unless another team ends up signing him before the start of the season.

“The Panthers are releasing LB/S Isaiah Simmons,” Meirov reported. “The former No. 8 overall pick, known for his versatility, appeared in 5 games for Carolina last season and re-signed on a 1-year deal this offseason.”

Simmons was a first-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2020 NFL Draft. He was viewed as an intriguing prospect as he is a highly versatile player who can play both linebacker and safety. But his time in Arizona only lasted three seasons after the franchise traded him to the New York Giants, where he played for two years.

The ex-Clemson Tigers star played nearly every single contest in his first five years in the league, missing just one game in his rookie year with the Cardinals. That all changed when he signed with the Panthers last season, as Isaiah Simmons was limited to just five games. He was initially a cut candidate last training camp but signed with Carolina as a late season acquisition.
