Steelers keep 4 QBs on roster after heated battle between Drew Allar, Will Howard

Head coach Mike McCarthy will have plenty of decisions to make as he finalizes his first roster with the Pittsburgh Steelers. When it comes to the quarterback situation, McCarthy clearly believes the more the merrier.

The Steelers are carrying four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and Drew Allar have all made the cut.

Rodgers’ inclusion was inevitable. He is entering what is expected to be his final season in the NFL. The Steelers brought him back on a one-year deal over the offseason to help bolster their playoff push. In 2026, Pittsburgh’s offensive hopes are in Rodgers’ hands.

Behind them though, there was nothing certain with the Steelers’ quarterback room. But with all three providing value in the franchise’s eyes, they decided not to make any changes.

Of all three players, Rudolph offers the most NFL experience. If Rodgers were to suffer an injury that forced him to the sidelines, perhaps he is the player Pittsburgh would call upon.

When the Steelers look into their future, that’s where Howard and Allar appear. The former was a sixth-round pick in 2025 while the latter arrived as a third-rounder in 2026. As long as Rodgers is around, it seems unlikely either will see the field. But both will be around the organization, seeing how McCarthy and company operate. That will be crucial experience if either is set to take over as QB in 2027.

When it comes to Steelers quarterbacks, all eyes are on Rodgers. But Pittsburgh wanted to ensure all their ducks were in a row at the position.
