Cowboys’ Von Miller signing costs 2026 free agent addition a spot in EDGE room

The Dallas Cowboys made one of the biggest moves of the late offseason when they signed Von Miller. The future Hall of Famer ranks ninth all-time in sacks with 138.5, and the former Super Bowl MVP still has plenty of quarterback hurries left in the tank to bring to his hometown of Dallas.

Last season, Miller had nine sacks with the Washington Commanders, and he brings pass-rushing prowess to a team still trying to navigate life after Micah Parsons. The fact that he lasted so long into free agency was a shock, but Miller’s addition also created more pass-rushing depth on the roster than the Cowboys could fit in 53 spots.

One of Dallas’ final cut-down day decisions was to release Sam Williams, whom the team had re-signed to a $2 million deal back in March. Williams’ contract was guaranteed, but the 2022 second-round pick became expendable with a proven commodity like Miller on the roster. Williams showed flashes of greatness early in his career, as he racked up 8.5 sacks through his first two seasons. He missed all of year three with a torn ACL, though, and the defensive end didn’t look like the same player last year when he had just one sack.

Miller, Rashan Gary, Malachi Lawrence, Donovan Ezeiruaku, James Houston, and Tyrus Wheat made the team as Dallas’ edge rushers over Williams, who wasn’t the only surprise cut the Cowboys made. Dallas also let go of running back Jayden Blue in one of the most surprising moves of the cut-down deadline.
