Mykel Williams out at least 4 games after injury move due to ACL issue
The San Francisco 49ers find themselves preparing for Aaron Donald again by trading for offensive lineman Jarrett Patterson. Yet the franchise is dealing with a notable NFL Injury on the opposite trenches. This one involving edge rusher Mykel Williams.
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter posted the update on that front Sunday.
“49ers placed DL Mykel Williams on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform List. Meaning the former first-round pick will be sidelined for at least the first four games this season,” Schefter posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
San Francisco dealt with one high-profile edge injury already with Nick Bosa. The 49ers are trying to get Bosa slowly back up to speed amid his torn ACL. Especially before the Niners take on Donald and the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 down in Melbourne, Australia.
But Williams will miss the season opener with his own ACL ailment. He won’t be able to form his own tandem with Bosa while the Rams combine Donald with Myles Garrett together on their defensive line.
Bosa leads the edge rusher unit still. Then it’s Sam Okuayinou, Keion White and Romello Height as the top four edge rush options. That entire quartet made the final 53-man roster cut on Sunday, as the 49ers joined the rest of the league in completing their two-deep.
Williams landed with the 49ers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Georgia. His selection energized the 49ers Faithful with his potential paired with Bosa. But fans must wait until October for Williams to return.
