Nikola Jokic reaffirms his loyalty to Nuggets despite disappointing playoff exit

The Denver Nuggets’ season ended Thursday night with a brutal 110-98 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 6, marking a disappointing first-round elimination on the road. Nikola Jokic led Denver with 28 points, but his heroics weren’t enough even against a shorthanded Timberwolves team.

Despite a disheartening end to the season, Jokic still reaffirmed his loyalty to Denver.

“I still want to be a Nugget forever,” the three-time MVP said in his postgame presser.

The statement carries significant weight given Jokic’s contract situation. The franchise cornerstone can become a free agent in 2027, which essentially means he is on an expiring deal. He could have signed an extension last offseason, but chose to wait it out as he would be eligible for more money this offseason and beyond.

Regardless, Jokic has clearly indicated his intention to sign an extension this summer. In fact, his commitment runs deeper than basketball.

“I really found peace here,” Jokić said earlier this season. “My two kids were born here. Everyone’s here. Peace, home, I found my life here. And I like life here. I don’t feel the need, I don’t have the urge to. We built something here, together as a team.”

Speaking of money, this playoff loss unfortunately exposes an issue the Nuggets now have to deal with. The team now faces a disastrous luxury tax bill. The way the current roster is assembled, the Nuggets are creeping up on the second apron before even taking into account the potential extensions for Peyton Watson and Tim Hardaway Jr.

With everything looking a bit grim following a bad playoff loss, perhaps Nuggets fans can look forward with a small glimmer of positivity knowing that the face of their franchise wants to stay long-term.
