NBA world buries Daryl Morey and 76ers for Jared McCain trade

Former Philadelphia 76ers guard Jared McCain excelled on Friday for the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Game 3 win over the San Antonio Spurs, 123-108, leading to fans of the ex-team no doubt reliving what could’ve been. As it was an emotional trade for McCain to be dealt from the 76ers to the Thunder, there is no denying the production he’s been giving his new team, leading to the basketball world calling out Daryl Morey.

Funny enough, Morey has since been relieved of his duties with Philadelphia, but fans and others are still calling out the former general manager for trading McCain for a 2026 first-round pick and three second-round picks. In the Game 3 win, McCain would record a playoff-high 24 points on 10 of 21 shooting from the field, two of 10 from deep, to go along with four rebounds.

The outing has led many in the NBA space to bring up the trade once again, like Rachel Nichols, referencing how Morey explained the trade at the time, saying how the 76ers sold high on McCain.

“Every time anyone talks about Jared McCain, all I can hear in my head is Daryl Morey saying ‘quite confident we’re selling high.’ Just the most yikes of yikeses,” Nichols wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Others continue to be astonished by the 76ers-Jared McCain trade 

McCain has carved out a key role off the bench for the Thunder as the team looks to win its second straight championship, with the team making the trade for the 16th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft at the last deadline. Another personality to post about the trade was former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III, sharing how it’s insane the 76ers didn’t get a player in return for McCain.

“Never forget that Daryl Morey traded Jared McCain to OKC and got absolutely no one in return,” Griffin wrote on X.

It does remain to be seen who Philadelphia selects with the draft picks the team got, as then the trade could be fully graded. McCain looks to be a crucial component for Oklahoma City’s title run, as 76ers fans won’t ever forget the trade.
