Klay Thompson to sign with Heat after Mavericks buyout agreement
Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks have officially reached a buyout agreement, the team announced on Friday afternoon. Upon clearing waivers, league sources told ClutchPoints that Thompson intends on signing a contract with the Miami Heat.
Throughout the offseason, the Mavs had pushed back at the idea of buying Thompson out of his contract, making it clear to rival teams that they intended to trade the five-time All-Star. The Heat have long held interest in Thompson, but only by way of a buyout, where they would then be able to offer him their remaining $8.9 million mid-level exception.
After two years in Dallas, Thompson is now prepared to head to South Beach and team up with All-Stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo in hopes of adding another championship ring to his collection.
“Klay is one of the great players and competitors of his generation, and we are grateful for everything he brought to the Mavericks organization, Mavericks President of Basketball Operations Masai Ujiri said in the team’s press release regarding Klay’s buyout. “We have tremendous respect for Klay and all that he has accomplished throughout his career, and we wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
This is a developing story that will be updated shortly.
