Mavericks’ Klay Thompson claps back at ‘casuals’ after Ray Allen career comparison
Ahead of his 16th NBA season, Dallas Mavericks shooter Klay Thompson reminded fans of his legacy in comparison to Hall of Fame guard Ray Allen. While Thompson could be headed to his third team before the 2026-27 season, he clapped back in the comments section of a post on Instagram.
When a user compared Allen leading the Milwaukee Bucks to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2001 to Thompson’s secondary role on the Golden State Warriors, Thompson reminded the fan of his role before Kevin Durant joined the Warriors in the comments section of the Instagram post.
“You do realize I was the 2nd leading scorer on two championship teams without KD? You want me to go to a bad team and put up empty stats, that’s easy buddy,” Thompson said. “Holy s***, I led the 2016 playoffs in points scored you casuals.”

Thompson averaged 21.7 points, two points shy of Stephen Curry’s team-leading 23.8 points, in the 2015 NBA Finals. Then, in the Warriors’ Finals rematch against the Cleveland Cavs, he was the second-leading scorer once again (19.6), trailing Curry by three points (22.6) in 2016.
Ray Allen led the Bucks with 27.1 points, 5.4 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game against Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers across seven games in the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals. Iverson and the 76ers eliminated the Bucks, 4-3, to advance to the NBA Finals.
However, he did lead the Warriors in points (582) throughout Golden State’s playoff run, averaging 24.3 points per game to Curry’s 25.1.
Klay Thompson’s fate ahead of 2026-27 remains undecided
Mavericks veteran Klay Thompson says LeBron James was the toughest player he had to guard as he and the Warriors defeated James and the Cavs three times in four consecutive Finals meetings between 2015 and 2018. Thompson, 36, is reportedly hoping to compete for a fifth NBA title this upcoming season.
Thompson has been reportedly linked to possibly joining Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Heat, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.
“Miami continues to sit at the front of the line of teams hoping that Dallas buys out Klay Thompson,” Stein reported. “The Heat this week missed out on well-known target when Beal elected to re-sign with the Clippers. The Stein Line has learned that there has indeed been direct contact this offseason between new Mavericks president Masai Ujiri and Thompson, but Dallas has maintained since mid-June that it prefers to trade Thompson if possible rather than buy him out.
“Two sources briefed on the process said this week that it remains unclear how the situation will play out. Dallas currently has 16 standard contracts on its books — one more than the league maximum that will be allowed as of Oct. 19 — but Thompson’s fate remained undecided as of Sunday.”
Thompson and the Mavericks could reach a sign-and-trade between now and the start of the regular season.
