NBA rumors: Masai Ujiri wants Kawhi Leonard reunion with Mavericks-Clippers trade

Incoming Dallas Mavericks president Masai Ujiri squashed one big trade rumor already involving Kyrie Irving. But he’s not shying from attempting to reunite with Kawhi Leonard. Hence why a Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers NBA trade deal has become one to watch.

The Athletic’s trio of Sam Amick, Christian Clark and Dan Wolke revealed the Mavs executive “has interest” in bringing in Leonard. This move reunites both men from their 2019 NBA Finals title run with the Toronto Raptors.

“The Mavericks and LA Clippers have discussed a deal that would send the seven-time All-Star to Dallas for a package that would include P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson and draft picks, said league sources granted anonymity to describe deliberations still in progress,” the report stated Sunday.

Ujiri pulled off a blockbuster deal before involving the “Klaw.” He famously traded for the then-San Antonio Spurs NBA All-Star in 2018. Leonard and Danny Green landed with the Raptors in exchange for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poetl and a first rounder. Landing Leonard sparked Toronto’s first and only Larry O’Brien Trophy over the Golden State Warriors, which also saw Leonard win the finals’ Most Valuable Player honor.

Why is this deal suddenly surfacing? Leonard is owed $50.3 million this season, but has one year left on his deal with LAC. So money persuades why the Clippers might feel inclined to deal Leonard away.

But adding Leonard adds him to a room that features one other NBA Finals champ in Irving. Plus places Leonard next to last season’s top rookie Cooper Flagg. Now Dallas tabbed former Michigan head coach Dusty May to lead the franchise.
