NBA rumors: Giannis Antetokounmpo trade suitors slammed over head with youth movement warning

For years, if NBA teams wanted to contend, they almost certainly had to make a trade for a veteran superstar. Teams looking to add one more piece this offseason might have the option of trading for one of the best players in the NBA: Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Milwaukee Bucks star and two-time MVP winner has been involved in trade rumors for quite some time now, but he has regularly defaulted to stating that he wants Milwaukee to be his home. Things seem different leading up to this upcoming offseason, though, and it seems more likely than ever before that the Greek Freak will be on the move.

The era of the megatrades has come and gone, though. The newest trend in the league is that youth movements pay off sooner rather than later. Young teams are now legitimate contenders, and the numbers back that up. Of the 10 NBA teams that gave the most minutes to players under 25 years of age, seven of them were playoff teams.

That list includes the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. Those teams ranked second and fifth in minutes to youngsters, yet they are competing in the Western Conference Finals. The Orlando Magic were first in minutes given to players younger than 25 years of age, and they took the number-one-seeded Detroit Pistons to seven games. Detroit was another team on this list, as were the Houston Rockets, Toronto Raptors, and Portland Trail Blazers.

The rest of the top 10 was rounded out by the Washington Wizards, Memphis Grizzlies, and Charlotte Hornets, and all of those teams have high hopes for the future. The Wizards will combine their youth movement next season with veteran leadership, as they’ve already traded for Trae Young and Anthony Davis. The Grizzlies are a ways away from contending, but they are loaded with future draft picks, and the Hornets impressed in the play-in tournament.

Antetokounmpo will turn 32 during the course of next season. He clearly still has plenty left in the tank, but the NBA’s youth movement is a fair warning to teams interested in trading for him. Players so heavily reliant on their physical abilities tend to regress quicker than others, and some teams will have to question if giving up a haul of picks and prospects for a player who is arguably past his prime will be worth it or not.
