NBA insider declares Timberwolves’ fearless Wemby strategy the key to upsetting Spurs in Game 1
The Minnesota Timberwolves opened their second-round series with a 104-102 win over the San Antonio Spurs, and a fearless approach against Victor Wembanyama proved decisive.
Chris Hine of the Minnesota Star Tribune pointed to Minnesota’s mentality as the defining factor, highlighting a sequence that captured the Timberwolves’ approach. In the fourth quarter, Terrence Shannon Jr. attacked the rim on a floater attempt that Wembanyama rejected — one of his 12 blocks on the night. Rather than retreat, Minnesota stayed aggressive. Jaden McDaniels secured the loose ball and kicked it out to Mike Conley, who knocked down a corner three to extend the lead to 95-86 with just over 4:40 remaining.
Hine described the sequence as emblematic of Minnesota’s mindset.
“I just think this encapsulates why the Wolves won tonight. Fearless Shannon drive, gets stuffed again. As he said afterward, so what? Don’t let the potential emotion after a block knock you back on your heels.
McDaniels keeps the play alive. Conley there to take advantage.”

Wembanyama’s presence loomed throughout the game, as he altered shots and protected the rim at an elite level. However, Minnesota’s willingness to continue attacking despite multiple rejections prevented the Spurs from fully controlling the defensive narrative.
Shannon’s fearless approach vs Wembanyama fuels Timberwolves’ Game 1 edge
Shannon embodied that approach. The second-year guard finished with 16 points, five rebounds and one assist while shooting 5-for-13 from the field and 6-for-8 from the free-throw line across 35 minutes. His downhill aggression forced the Spurs’ defense to stay engaged, even when Wembanyama was stationed near the baske
“He gonna have to block it every time, I ain’t gonna stop going downhill and I told him that when he said a little something after he blocked my second one. He gonna have to block it every time, man. I know he ain’t gonna block it every single time. I’m gonna dunk on him”

Minnesota’s strategy extended beyond individual plays. By maintaining composure and continuing to generate second-chance opportunities, the Timberwolves were able to offset Wembanyama’s defensive impact and create open looks from the perimeter.
With the win, Minnesota takes a 1-0 series lead and will look to build on that momentum in Game 2 on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. PT on ESPN. The Timberwolves’ approach in Game 1 demonstrated that sustained aggression — even against one of the league’s most dominant defenders — can shift the balance in a tightly contested playoff matchup.
