MLB rumors: Mets’ Freddy Peralta ‘more likely’ than Tarik Skubal to be traded before deadline
The New York Mets have been a disaster thus far on the 2026 MLB season, currently sitting at 22-33 after another loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The Mets entered this season with legit championship expectations, but are now fully behind the eight ball as the campaign reaches its summer months.
With all of the losing, some have wondered if the Mets might look to build for the future by trading some of the current veterans on their roster, and recently, MLB insider Ken Rosenthal broke down a name on the Mets’ pitching staff who may be more likely to get dealt than Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal, who has been the subject of immense trade rumors in recent weeks.
“I would say Freddy Peralta is much more likely to get traded than Tarik Skubal, at least right now,” said Rosenthal, per Foul Territory on X, formerly Twitter. “And the caveat here… is that we are more than two months away from the deadline.”
He also noted that the Tigers could theoretically be deterred from trading Skubal due to the weak division they are in, as well as the record amount of money they currently have tied to this roster.
Meanwhile, if the Mets were indeed to make Peralta available, he would likely have several suitors on the trade market, as there is always a market for premium starting pitching in the MLB.
It’s unclear how much New York would expect to get back in such a deal, but if the losing continues at its current rate, it’s hard to see the Mets standing pat with the current iteration of the roster.
The Mets will next hit the field for another game against the Reds on Wednesday evening.
