MLB rumors: Jon Heyman names Mason Miller among Yankees’ top 2 trade deadline targets

The New York Yankees are currently in second place in the AL East, but in a position to make the playoffs in a wild card spot. They have had strong starting pitching, including an All-Star in Cam Schlittler.

Still, the Yankees would like to upgrade their bullpen, among other positions, and Jon Heyman of The New York Post is giving the team two targets to look at.

“The Yankees’ top two deadline targets should be All-Star closer Mason Miller, the game’s top closer, and Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers,” Heyman wrote.

Currently, David Bednar is the closer for the Yankees. He is 3-3 on the year with a 2.70 ERA and 18 saves. He has also blown two saves. Meanwhile, Fernando Cruz has been the primary setup man. He is 4-3 with a 2.25 ERA and 16 holds on the year. Bednar could join Cruz as a setup man, allowing Miller to move into the closer role. Miller has been great this year in the bullpen. He is 2-1 with a 0.91 ERA and 0.78 WHIP while having 25 saves on the year. This would give the Yankees a dominant bullpen, and combined with solid starting pitching, would put them in contention to make a run at the World Series.

Meanwhile, upgrading at catcher needs to be a priority. Austin Wells has been dreadful this year. He is hitting just .155 with six home runs and 13 RBIs. Ryan Jeffers would be a massive upgrade. He is hitting .292 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs so far this year.

The Yankees are 54-42 on the year, and three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. The Yankees open a series with the Los Angeles Dodgers after the All-Star break.
