Expectations are high for Michigan in 2026 under new coach Kyle Whittingham. Meanwhile, Bryce Underwood has high expectations for himself in his second season as the Wolverines starting quarterback.

In Spring practice, Underwood showed some improvement, but also showed off some trick plays, hitting a behind-the-back pass.

Now, Underwood is speaking about his sick pass, according to Chris Low of On3.

“It just happened, no real thought behind it,” Underwood said. “Sometimes when I’m playing around with my teammates and things like that, I will try stuff, throwing with my left hand, throwing it behind me, just letting the moment happen. On that one, when I went to the sideline, the other quarterbacks were looking at me with their eyes just huge. I’m like, ‘I have nothing to say. My reflexes took over.’”

Underwood struggled some in his freshman year, especially in big games. In the loss to Oklahoma, he completed just nine of 24 passes for 142 yards without a touchdown. Meanwhile, he was just eight for 18 against Ohio State for 63 yards. He had just one yard on the ground as well, while throwing an interception and not accounting for a touchdown. Regardless, Underwood learned from his true-freshman season being QB 1 in Ann Arbor.

“I guess I look at it as a test run,” Underwood said. “I knew I had a lot to learn and that there would be ups and downs. I’m just glad the team welcomed me in and helped me grow as a leader. I knew overall they believed in me, and that helped me never lose belief in what I was doing. I looked at it as we were building together, and we’re going to keep building.”

Whittingham saw enough to know he can build his offense around Underwood, who turned 18 just weeks before his freshman campaign.

“We found out a lot more about him, and he made some big strides this spring, his footwork, his pocket presence, his mechanics, his decision-making. He’s taken a step forward in all those areas,” Whittingham told On3. “He still has a ways to go, and we’ll continue that through the summer and fall camp. By the time we line up on Sept. 5 (against Western Michigan in the opener), we’ll have a really good idea of what we want to do.”

Michigan is projected to contend for a spot in the College Football Playoffs in 2026, and Underwood is a major reason why.
