Mets announce multiple roster moves after Carlos Mendoza firing

The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday. The Mets’ struggles are not all Mendoza’s fault, but the Mets ultimately made the decision. Now president of baseball operations David Stearns needs to find a way to help the ball club turn their season around. Following the Mendoza news on Friday, New York announced multiple roster moves.

Outfielder Tyrone Taylor returned from his rehab assignment and was reinstated from the 10-day injured list while left-handed pitcher Zach Thornton was recalled from Triple-A. In corresponding moves, right-handed pitcher Daniel Duarte and outfielder MJ Melendez were optioned to Triple-A.

Taylor, 32, hit .186/.210/.320 across his first 43 games played this season. While he has struggled, Taylor provides the Mets with crucial outfield depth. He could certainly impact the ball club for the remainder of the ’26 campaign.

Thornton, 24, has made only one MLB appearance in his career, which occurred in 2026. Between Double-A and Triple-A this season, the southpaw has turned in a 4.25 ERA across 12 total outings (11 starts).

It has been a frustrating season for this Mets ball club. They feature talent on the roster, but wins have still been difficult to find for the team. They are currently 34-47 and in last place in the American League East standings. Perhaps Taylor and Thornton will help New York find more consistency as a team.

On Friday, the Mets are set to begin a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies at home. First pitch for the contest on Friday night between the NL East rivals is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST.
