Mets announce 2 roster moves ahead of Tigers clash

The New York Mets are 15-25, sitting in last place in the NL East. Now, the team is making a move, as the Mets are calling up their top prospect ahead of their series with the Detroit Tigers.

Today, the Mets made the move, calling A.J. Ewing up to the majors officially, and also announced the corresponding move on X, formerly Twitter.

The Mets have designated infielder Andy Ibanez for assignment. This is the third time this calendar year that Ibanez has been designated for assignment. Ibanez signed a one-year deal worth $1.2 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers back on January 13. He did not last long with the Dodgers, being designated for assignment on February 3, but was claimed by the Athletics.

He played 11 games with the Athletics this year, going just 2-17 with three RBIs. Ibanez would be designated for assignment once again on April 26 and was claimed four days later by the Mets. He appeared in just three games with the Mets, going 0-6 before being designated for assignment once again.

Ewing is the number two prospect for the Mets and 28th in all of the majors according to ESPN. He has played 12 games at the Triple-A level, with a .326 batting average and a .392 on-base percentage. He also had three doubles and four RBIs while also stealing five bases. Ewing began the year with the Double-A affiliate, hitting .349 before making the move to Triple-A.

In his minor league career, Ewing hit .290 with 15 home runs and 101 stolen bases over 251 games.

The Mets have been criticized for their roster construction, and now they are making a move to try to help the team improve from their abysmal record.  The Mets open up their series with the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night in New York.
