Manny Diaz drops ‘thankful’ take on Darian Mensah’s lone Blue Devils season
Following a record-breaking season, quarterback Darian Mensah recently transferred to Miami. Although the news first emerged two months ago, Mensah shared mixed emotions about the move, stating that the Duke football team “changed my life.”
However, he refrained from giving a final message to fans due to their recent negativity towards him.
In light of Mensah’s high-profile departure, Duke head coach Manny Diaz emphasized a message of positivity and resilience.
In an interview with Andy Staples of On3, Diaz expressed, “My overriding emotion is gratitude, and I really mean that. I am thankful that Darian Mensah came to Duke.”
This sense of appreciation comes even after Mensah led the ACC in passing with 3,973 yards and set a school record with 34 touchdowns during his single season in Durham.
Instead of harboring resentment towards Mensah for joining an ACC rival, Diaz used the situation as a motivational tool for the Blue Devils.

He drew a parallel to the NBA, specifically how the Oklahoma City Thunder responded to the departure of Kevin Durant.
Diaz advised his team that “the best franchises respond,” noting that in the dozen years since Durant left, the Thunder developed into one of the best franchises in sports, ultimately winning a championship in 2025.
Ultimately, Diaz views Mensah’s move to Miami as akin to Durant’s transfer to the Warriors.
While Miami gains a premier quarterback, Diaz believes the Blue Devils can emulate OKC’s championship journey by focusing on how the “best franchises” respond to losing a star player.
