Watch Adley Rutschman make first-ever hit in Red Sox uniform

Newly acquired catcher Adley Rutschman made his debut for the Boston Red Sox as scheduled on Tuesday against the Toronto Blue Jays.

In his first at-bat, Rutschman was fortunate to secure his first official hit by beating out a ground ball to first, per NESN/Fox Sports: MLB. In the top of the 3rd inning, Rutschman hit a soft grounder to second base. Toronto second baseman Ernie Clement threw an off-balance throw to first, but it wasn’t in time.

Boston moved a runner along to second with two outs and leading 1-0.

The Red Sox acquired Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles before the August 3 trade deadline. In addition, Boston got Jake Rodgers and cash considerations. The Orioles received pitchers Anthony Eyanson and Kyson Witherspoon along with outfielder Enddy Azocar and catcher Carlos Narváez.

Over the weekend, Rutschman played in a rehab assignment for Triple-A Worcester due to a left wrist injury. He caught for five innings and came away with one hit.

Rutschman arrives at a time when the Red Sox are surging. They have won 7 out of their last 10 games and are 64-54. They are also coming off a historic run in which they won 27 of their last 30 games and went on a 9-game winning streak.

A complete about-face from a poor first half of the season, in which they were 46-48 at the All-Star break.

Now, the Red Sox are 2nd behind the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card standings.

Nevertheless, Boston is looking to break a recent three-game losing streak.
