Mammoth makes shootout history in final game of season vs. Blues

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are here, and the Utah Mammoth have clinched a playoff berth, making NHL history with their first taste of success since relocating from Arizona. Additionally, the Mammoth have made shootout history, doing something no team has ever done after their final regular-season game with the St. Louis Blues, according to NHL News.

“NHL teams with 0 shootouts in a full season, salary cap era: Utah Mammoth, 2025/26 end of list. #TusksUp,” NHL News wrote on X.

Initially reported by Travis Yost, the Mammoth accomplished the mark as they fell 5-3 to the Blues. Utah finished with a record of 43-32-6, with all six of its extra-session losses finishing in overtime. While other teams like the Los Angeles Kings and Philadelphia Flyers were capitalizing on the shootout, the Mammoth never even got there.

It was a unique mark, especially in a league where plenty of teams play it safe during the 3 v 3 overtime, often choosing to circle back behind the blue line rather than risk taking a shot that might lead to a fast break the other way. Yet Utah made NHL history with this mark, and no team has come close to it.

The Mammoth will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the First Round. While they have plenty of momentum, they will also be shorthanded to start the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After avoiding the shootout, the team won’t have to worry about it in the playoffs. Playoff rules dictate that overtime is 5 v 5 for a full 2o minutes. This means that if the Mammoth go to overtime against the Golden Knights, it will be just another period where they likely don’t have to worry about a wayward shot leading to a bad fast break the other way.
