Leshawn Hammett reportedly out at Paul Quinn College
It appears that change is coming to Paul Quinn College’s men’s basketball program. Per a report by Adam Nelson of hoopsdirt.com, Paul Quinn men’s basketball coach Leshawn Hammett is no longer the head coach.
Before his time at Paul Quinn, Hammett was a coach at Penn State Wilkes-Barre for nine seasons. He saw considerable success, becoming the institution’s all-time winningest coach in school history, as he secured 201 wins. He also recruited and developed talents, coaching 20 All-Americans and developing two Defensive Players of the Year, three national tournament MVPs, and two Freshmen of the Year. He also won two back-to-back national championships in the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons.
He was hired at Paul Quinn in April 2025, but the team struggled, going 9-17 and 4-8 in the HBCU Athletic Conference. No official confirmation has come from the school yet. His departure would put Paul Quinn on the course to build a winning culture with another leader.
This comes as Paul Quinn College officially joined the HBCU Athletic Conference in 2025 alongside
Huston-Tillotson University.
“We are thrilled to welcome Huston-Tillotson University and Paul Quinn College to the HBCU Athletic Conference,” said HBCUAC Commissioner Kiki Baker Barnes, PhD. in a statement in 2025. “Both institutions bring a rich tradition of athletic and academic excellence, and their addition strengthens our conference’s mission to elevate HBCU athletics while creating more opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest levels.”
“The Quinnite Nation is tremendously excited about joining the HBCUAC,” said Paul Quinn President Michael Sorrell in a statement in 2025. “We understood the conference’s value and appeal from day one and are grateful to have been invited to join. The opportunity to continue our friendly rivalries with Wiley and H-T, have our own streaming platform, and elevate our athletic programs on a national level represents the type of future we want for our students and community.”
