Lamar Odom wants to be an HBCU coach; names dream destination
Former NBA standout Lamar Odom is making it clear that he wants to be an HBCU coach, and he has a destination in mind. In an interview on A Date with Jenna and Shinnel, Odom spoke about his desire to be an HBCU coach.
“I would love to coach because I have a basketball mind that’s just waiting to go,” Odom said.
During the interview, he spoke about which school he would love to coach for, naming Winston-Salem State University.
“Winston-Salem State, which is an HBCU, they have a position open. So shout out to everybody in Winston-Salem.”
Winston-Salem State is a prestigious basketball program, formerly coached by Clarence “Big House” Gaines. However, the program has struggled over the past few seasons. They recently fired men’s basketball coach Corey Thompson and have been searching for the next head coach to lead the program.
Per a report by HBCU Gameday in early March, an unidentified team was courting Odom and looking into his coaching services during the CIAA tournament, and another team was interested in his candidacy.
“The two-time NBA champion was recently spotted at the CIAA Tournament and is reportedly being recruited by at least one of the league’s Division II programs. Odom also believed to have interest in another school as well,” HBCU Gameday founder Steven J. Gaither reported.
Unlike other HBCU celebrity coaching hires, Odom has some HBCU experience. He made his HBCU debut as a cast member on season one of BET’s College Hill: Celebrity Edition. The show was a spinoff of the original College Hill that aired in several variations in the two thousands and featured regular HBCU students documenting their lives in and outside of the classroom.
Texas Southern was the home of the first season of College Hill: Celebrity Edition, and Odom took an interest in the men’s basketball team while he was enrolled. In one episode, he spoke with the team and indicated that he one day wanted to be a head coach as he gave the players advice. He also spoke about his intentions to be an HBCU coach and the beauty of the HBCU experience in an interview on the Tracy McGrady and Vince Carter-led show, The Cousins.
“I would love to. Probably like an HBCU team or something like that because that’s one thing about going to college too. I’m mad that I ain’t give an HBCU look or visit. You know what I mean? Because I went to Texas Southern to shoot the reality show and I seen the strength man. All these black people learning together and getting the right education, powerful.”
Whether Winston-Salem State is the school that has interest in Odom is yet to be seen, but all eyes will be on Odom and his potential HBCU coaching candidacy as the offseason moves on.
