Kawhi Leonard expected to put pressure on Clippers to improve this summer

There might be pressure on Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers to have a significantly better roster this offseason.

Leonard and the Clippers’ 2025-26 campaign ended after they lost to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night. This concludes a season where Los Angeles had a poor start before igniting a run in the second half of the campaign to return to the playoff picture.

Loenard finished his seventh season with the team, which has his future in question as the NBA keeps investigating into the Aspiration deal. Nonetheless, team reporter Tomer Azarly provided his thoughts regarding negotiations between the two parties during an April 16 appearance on the Clutch Scoops show.

“This was the first healthy offseason Kawhi had and he made a concerted effort to be more aggressive this year. We saw a career high in points, career highs in three pointers made. The highest rate of his career. And the efficiency didn’t drop off. So this is a guy who is still very capable of playing at a high level, but he does need a couple more pieces around him, especially at his age. While he is comfortable in LA, I do think he’ll want to put some type of pressure on this team to, ‘Hey what can you do around me to help us improve,” Azarly said at the 46:01 mark.

What lies ahead for Kawhi Leonard, Clippers

Kawhi Leonard has one more year remaining on his current deal, which will expire in the 2027 offseason. It will be intriguing to see whether the Clippers decide to keep him or move on from him to begin a new era of their franchise’s history.

Leonard had a relatively healthy campaign, taking part in 65 games as he will be eligible for the league’s end-of-season awards. He averaged 27.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.9 steals per game this campaign. He boasted shooting splits of 50.5% from the field, including 38.7% from beyond the arc, and 89.2% from the free-throw line.

Los Angeles ended the season with a 42-40 record, sitting at ninth place in the Western Conference standings. They will regroup and adjust in the offseason for better results next season.
