Kate Martin lands contract with Sky after getting waived by Sparks

The Chicago Sky had another disastrous season in 2026. Chicago is 15-25 and on a three-game losing streak to begin the month of September. The Sky just brought in one popular player who has traveled around the W over the past two seasons. Perhaps she’ll finally find her home in Chicago.

The Sky announced on Wednesday that they have signed guard Kate Martin to a developmental contract, per the team’s social media.

WNBA players on developmental contracts are eligible to play in 12 regular season games before a team must convert them to a standard contract. That will not be an issue for Chicago, as they only have four games left this season.

This move comes less than a week after Martin was waived by the Sparks in favor of forward Aaliyah Nye.

Martin became the first player in Sparks franchise history to be elevated from a developmental contract back in July. Unfortunately, Martin’s usage slowly decreased throughout the month, eventually leading to her being waived.

The third-year guard out of Iowa never quite found her footing in LA. She averaged 2.3 points and 7.1 minutes per game in just 17 outings this season.

Martin was the 18th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft after a successful collegiate career playing alongside Caitlin Clark. She has bounced around the league over the past three years, joining her fourth franchise in Chicago.

Chicago is clearly willing to take a shot on Martin as they limp through the rest of another brutal season. The Sky will have some big questions to answer this offseason, which could give Martin an opportunity to win a roster spot next season. But first she’ll need to prove her worth as a teammate during the final weeks of the 2026 regular season.

Next up for the Sky is a home game against the Mystics on September 17th.
