Who will be Bo Nix’s backup quarterback with Broncos this season?

The Denver Broncos made a lot of hard roster cut decisions, but one that they weren’t willing to make was moving off of one of their quarterbacks. The team’s starter, Bo Nix, has established himself quite nicely through two seasons. His numbers are better than each of the five quarterbacks drafted ahead of him in the 2024 NFL Draft, and had it not been for an untimely injury in the postseason, it is possible that Nix could have led the Broncos to a Super Bowl appearance last season.

Nix has recovered from ankle surgery and is back to leading the way, but despite how much Sean Payton and company believe in the Oregon product, the Broncos also have high opinions of Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger, which led to the team rostering all three signal callers on their 53-man roster.

Stidham was the backup last year. Many consider him one of the best backup QBs in the NFL, and he was thrust into action during the AFC Championship Game while Nix was hurt last season. Ehlinger has shown a lot of promise in Denver, though. He was on the practice squad last year despite reported interest from other teams, and the Texas product looked great during training camp and the preseason. Ehlinger even had a three-touchdown performance during the Broncos’ preseason finale, and Denver felt as though they couldn’t risk exposing him to being picked up by another squad.

Fans wondered if Ehlinger’s preseason success could lead to him supplanting Stidham on the depth chart, or even lead to Stidham being forced off the roster. However, Zach Stevens reported that Payton said Stidham will still be Nix’s backup. Hopefully, the Broncos won’t have to use him in high-leverage situations, as they did last year, but Denver is confident that Stidham can perform at a higher level than he did in the postseason last season.
