NFL rumors: Packers GM calls Josh Sweat trade talks fake news, but could they still make a deal?

The Green Bay Packers have been among the many teams making last-minute additions and cuts to their roster ahead of the upcoming 2026 NFL season. One player the Packers have been tied to in trade talks is Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat.

Recently, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst claimed that “Somebody’s making stuff up” when asked about those rumors, per The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman.

However, NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN isn’t convinced that this is really the case.

“…there certainly exists a world in which the Cardinals fall out of contention between now and the trade deadline. There have been several reports this offseason about Sweat being unhappy in Arizona and possibly wanting out,” noted Graziano on ESPN.com.

In fact, many fans and pundits are preemptively removing the Cardinals from any serious contention talks before the season even begins, with Arizona’s roster widely viewed as one of the worst in the NFL.

With this being the case, it’s not difficult to imagine Sweat growing frustrated with the lack of competitive football being played and setting his eyes on greener pastures, like, say, Green Bay.

The Packers will have a hole on their defensive line for at least the first several weeks of the season as superstar Micah Parsons works his way back from the torn ACL injury he suffered last year against the Denver Broncos.

Even when Parsons is back, having Sweat on the defensive line alongside him would give the Packers a lethal pass rushing duo and potentially elevate them to another tier in the NFC race.

In any case, the Packers are slated to kick off their new season on September 13 on the road against the Minnesota Vikings.
