How Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire uses savage Brendan Sorsby trash talk to get Will Hammond ‘fired up’

Texas Tech football expected Brendan Sorsby to be the starting quarterback this year. Instead, Will Hammond will be starting for the Red Raiders after the Sorbsy gambling scandal.

As Hammond prepares for Week 1, he is also explaining how Joey McGuire is firing him up, per Brett McMurphy of On3.

“McGuire straight up said ‘Will, people are doubting you. If Sorsby was still our quarterback, we’d be in the top five in the preseason rankings. But because it’s you, we’re No. 12.’ Think about that,” Hammond said. “That’s the type of stuff that gets me up in the morning. There’s a lot of things that get me up in the morning, but that’s one of them. It just fires me up, dude. If people think this team’s gonna be any different than it was gonna be before – that we’re not gonna be better than we were before – they’re wrong.”

Texas Tech won the Big 12 for the first time. It was also their first conference title since winning the Southwest Conference in 1995. Expectations are for them to contend for another title in 2026.

“Last year our end-all, be-all goal was winning the Big 12, and once we did that, we kind of felt like we’d arrived,” Hammond said. “It was almost like a breath of fresh air, because we’d never done that before.”

Meanwhile, Hammond also knows that the goal this year is bigger than just a conference title. They lost in the playoffs to Oregon, falling 23-0.

“We’ve all got a pretty bad feeling in our stomachs after Jan. 1, losing to Oregon, not scoring a single point,” Hammond said. “That’s something you carry with you. That’s another thing that gets you up in the morning. We didn’t score in the playoffs.”

Texas Tech opens its season on September 5 against Abilene Christian.
