Garrett Crochet takes big step toward injury return

For close to a month, Garrett Crochet has been making his way back to the Boston Red Sox from injury.

On Tuesday, Crochet was seen throwing off the mound in the bullpen at Fenway Park, per Rob Bradford of WEEI. A huge sign that Crochet is getting closer and closer to returning.

Crochet was getting some throws in while the Red Sox played against the Seattle Mariners.

Crochet has been on the 60-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation and lat discomfort. Upon his return, Crochet is expected to head to the bullpen.

Crochet is 3-3 with a 6.30 ERA and 37 strikeouts. His last start was on April 25 against the Baltimore Orioles, where he threw six scoreless innings and came away with seven strikeouts.

After that, he was placed on the injured list.

Crochet’s eventual return will come as the Red Sox look to secure a Wild Card playoff spot. After a sluggish first half, Boston made a complete about-face in the second half, going 27-5 over 32 games in July and August.

They are currently 4.5 games behind their rival New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card standings. However, they are coming off three losses to the Yankees in their last four games. Plus, they lost to the Mariners 9-6 on Tuesday and split their last ten games.

They are also dealing with real fatigue in their bullpen. The hope is that a healthy Crochet will provide fresh relief and depth at the most urgent time.

Crochet is expected to return later this month.
