Tiger Woods receives punishment after plea deal in DUI case

One of the stipulations of the plea deal in his DUI case has resulted in golf icon Tiger Woods having his driver’s license suspended for five years on Wednesday, Sep. 2, 2026.

Woods pleaded no contest after his arrest in March to a reduced charge of reckless driving and refusal to take a lawful test in Martin County Circuit Court in Florida (via ESPN). Additionally, Woods agreed to pay $1,500 in fines and was found guilty of careless driving, a moving violation.

According to the judge, Darren Steele, Woods having his license suspended “is for the safety of the public.” Steele also noted, “There are no exceptions. If you were to drive for any reason at all, you would go immediately back to jail.”

So, it sounds like Woods will have to stay clean for the next five years. If he does, he will get his driver’s license back at the end of the suspension.

Tiger Woods’ DUI arrest in March

Woods was arrested on Mar. 27 on suspicion of DUI and refusal to submit to a lawful test. This came after his SUV clipped a trailer, which was being hauled by a truck, and resulted in it rolling on its side.

Initially, he pleaded not guilty to the charges. He claimed that he was looking at his cellphone and changing the radio station at the time of the accident.

In the wake of his arrest, he announced that he was going to step away from golf for a “period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.” Woods was then admitted to an in-patient treatment facility in Switzerland.

Unfortunately, this is also not his first DUI arrest. He was arrested on suspicion of a DUI in 2017 after he was found asleep at the wheel of his running car by police. Four years later, he was involved in a one-car crash that resulted in several leg injuries.
