Will Jack Flaherty return this season? Here’s the latest injury update

On July 21, Detroit Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty was placed on the injured list as a result of right flexor inflammation.

The Tigers received a progress report on Tuesday showing Flaherty is making inroads, per MLB.com. On Tuesday, Flaherty threw 20 pitches to two hitters while taking part in his fourth live batting practice. He threw 93 mph and felt good.

The expectation is that Flaherty will return in early September.

Over the season, Flaherty has bounced around the injured list. In June, Flaherty suffered discomfort in his lower leg after pitching a game against the Cleveland Guardians. He came out of the game after throwing three innings and giving up two runs, three hits, and a walk.

Currently, Flaherty has a 3-8 record with a 4.59 ERA and 102 strikeouts. Meanwhile, the Tigers are 63-75 and in 4th place in the American League Central Division. The playoffs are completely out of the question for them.

In addition to Flaherty, the Tigers expect various other players to return. Among them are Justin Verlander, Kerry Carpenter, Brant Hurter, Parker Meadows, Matt Vierling, and Reese Olson, to name a few.

Detroit is in the midst of a three-game losing streak. They are set to conclude a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday. Afterward, they will begin a four-game road series against the Cleveland Guardians.

Flaherty first played with the Tigers in 2024. Afterward, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he won a World Series in 2024. Then Flaherty returned to Detroit in 2025.

He currently holds a record of 18-28 with a 4.12 ERA.
