Why Titans’ Robert Saleh is willing to bet his job on Cam Ward’s development

The Tennessee Titans are heading into a new era this season, and it goes beyond the new jerseys. They’ve brought in a new coaching staff that has experience, and they’re looking to get the best out of every one of their players. One of the main guys is Cam Ward, and head coach Robert Saleh is willing to bet the house that his second-year quarterback is going to be the one this season.

“This kid’s not going to fail,” Saleh said via ESPN’s Turron Davenport. “Obviously, I put my job on that one, but he’s not going to fail. He’s special.”

Ward showed during his rookie season that he has the talent to lead an offense, and it wasn’t until the end of the season that the offense as a whole started to see results. With Brian Daboll as the offensive coordinator this season, the hope is that he can help Ward get the ball rolling immediately.

“I have a lot of confidence in this young man,” Daboll said. “I have confidence in how he played [in college] at Miami and Washington State, and he had a whole year under his belt in the National Football League and getting accustomed to the speed of the game and the timing. That’s not an easy thing for quarterbacks.”

Things have gotten better for Ward over the course of training camp trying to learn Daboll’s system, and he should be ready when the season starts against the New York Jets.

“Everything slowed down,” Ward said. “We’re finally at the point where we’re not going to be installing too much stuff. One thing about coach [Daboll] is he can go to walkthrough, he can make up a play in his head, and we’ll run it right there and we will execute it right there. So it’s going to be nice to really show what we really are about when the time comes.”
