How Nick Saban is helping Alabama football after Indiana ‘beat s**t out of them’

The Alabama football program is just a few days away from kicking off its 2026 college football season. The Crimson Tide are looking to bounce back after getting steamrolled by the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl game last season, before which Indiana head coach Kurt Cignetti said he wanted to “beat the s*** out of them.”

Recently, Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack spoke about how legendary head coach Nick Saban has been helping the program recover from that loss this offseason.

“The disguise of what we’re doing and multiplicity of coverage is something that Coach Saban and I talked about,” Wommack said, per Chris Low of On3 Sports. “We’ve got to find ways on third down to be more multiple and to have more match-style coverage than what we did. But you can only do that when you have guys up front that can generate pass rush.”

Indeed, the Crimson Tide didn’t get much pressure on Fernando Mendoza during the Rose Bowl last year, consistently surrendering big plays down the field en route to the blowout loss.

It’s been six years since Alabama last won a national championship, and head coach Kalen DeBoer will certainly be feeling some heat this year if he can’t find a way to get the Crimson Tide back into the title conversation, at the very least.

“I know (Saban) likes what we do, and we don’t see things completely eye to eye across the board from a coverage standpoint, but we have similarities,” Wommack added.

Having one of the game’s greatest coaches in their corner should certainly help in their quest.

In any case, Alabama is set to kick off its new season on Saturday at home against East Carolina at 12:00 pm ET.
