This is a shocker as Brazil was expected to make a deep run in this tournament. However, despite not getting much recognition from many, Japan is sneaky good and can defeat any team in the world if they are playing at the top of their game. So far in the first half of this Round of 32 battle, Japan has been the better side.
Brazil must come out in the second half strong and score the equalizer early, or they could be in serious trouble. As for Japan, they are feeling confident heading into the second half. If they can hold on for the win, they have an opportunity to make a run in this tournament. The next battle would be against Ivory Coast or Norway, who are both winnable opponents.
There are still 45 minutes to be played, but Japan looked very good in that half, despite not possessing the ball for very long. Brazil controlled possession for 68% of the half and shot two balls on goal. None were a serious threat to Japan’s keeper, Zion Suzuki, who made two crucial saves.
Japan made their one and only shot on target count as Sano made history for his country. There is no better feeling than scoring your first-ever goal representing your country in a massive moment. Stay tuned for what should be an incredible second half between these two powerhouses.
