Justin Jefferson sends message to J.J. McCarthy amid Vikings QB battle, ‘step up his game’

There has been a fresh twist in one of the league’s most intriguing quarterback battles.

Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are currently battling it out to be named the Minnesota Vikings starter come Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers.

It’s a huge decision that ultimately rest on head coach Kevin O’Connell’s shoulders.

It’s also a big decision that effects star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who was handed extra motivation this offseason after a disrespectful ranking in CBS’ Sports top-100 NFL players list.

Minnesota’s training camp begins on July 28, and ahead of the continuation of the quarterbacks battle, Jefferson has sent each of his signals a message.

“I feel like it’s going to be a great competition battle. I feel like it’s going to be great, one for J.J. to get that competition in that room,” Jefferson said in an appearance on ESPN’s This Is Football with Kevin Clark.

“For him to have to step up his game a little bit and have to be that dog, and have to come to training camp every single day with that on his mind.

“Pretty much treating training camp like a game every single day. Just coming in and trying to make the most plays as possible, making right reads, being that leader that we need him to be.

“And for [Kyler], it’s all about coming in and being that leader that we expect him to be.

“Obviously, with the things he’s already done in the league, we know he’s a playmaker. It’s just all about coming to this team with that leadership role that we really need to fill in.

“And I feel like it’s just going to be a great battle all in all. I’m excited to see the guys flying around and feeling the energy of those two guys going at it all training camp.”

Following his release from the Arizona Cardinals, the Vikings picked up Murray as he attempts to rejuvenate his career.

O’Connell has a reputation for developing quarterbacks, helping turn around Super Bowl champion Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones‘ respective careers.

Murray, who is a Vikings fan, played 87 games in Arizona, recording 20,460 passing yards for 121 touchdowns to just 60 interceptions.

However, he took them to the playoffs just once, and struggled to ever find his footing in the red and white.

On the other hand, McCarthy was the undisputed starter in Minnesota this time last year.

McCarthy missed his entire rookie season through injury, and was unimpressive through 10 starts in 2025.

Despite being described as ‘salty’ at OTAs recently, McCarthy’s former QB coach has urged KOC not to give up on him, and O’Connell has given no indication as to who is in the lead to start come Week 1.

Ultimately, Jefferson just wants to see the two quarterbacks bring out the best in each other.

After all, talk is talk, and it will be the best-performing man who will step up against Trevor Lawrence and the Jags in the 2026 season-opener.
