Jon Gruden reveals bombshell NFL career desire made more difficult by chaotic Raiders firing
These days, former head coach Jon Gruden is finding unique stories. But he still has a keen eye on the NFL. However, his bombshell career desire is made more difficult by his chaotic Raiders firing.
Gruden has experience as a Monday Night Football analyst. But he wants to return to the booth as a play-by-play announcer, according to JoeBucsFan.com.
“I was a broadcaster for nine years; hell’s bells,” Gruden said on The Ira Kaufman Podcast, via JoeBucsFan.com. “I want to be play-by-play. You know, Frank Gifford, he transitioned into the play-by-play role. I would like to transition. I had nine years of watching these guys — [Mike] Tirico. And I’d like to give that a shot, man.”
Jon Gruden’s 2021 Raiders firing could stand in the way
Gruden may struggle to get past that issue, according to NBC Sports.
“Of course, it could be difficult for Gruden to get a shot with any of the NFL’s current broadcast partners,” Mike Florio wrote. “His tiger-by-the-tail lawsuit against the NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell would complicate any such efforts, to say the least.”
However, Florio offered a potential bridge.
“Let’s find out if he’s got the chops,” Florio wrote. “Someone should hire him for a low-level college game and see what he can do. Good, bad, or ugly, it would definitely generate more viewers than the telecast would otherwise attract.”
Gruden began his head coaching career with the Raiders in 1998. He later led the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title in 2002. He had three more winning seasons with the Buccaneers before returning to the Raiders.
Things didn’t end well, with Gruden resigning despite a 3-2 start to the 2021 season, according to ESPN at the time.
“Jon Gruden has resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders following reports that emails he wrote over a 10-year period included racist, misogynistic and anti-gay language,” Paul Gutierrez wrote.
“I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction,” Gruden said after resigning. “Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”
