Dream star Angel Reese could miss Sunday’s clash with Lynx after 8th technical foul

Angel Reese may have to watch one of the Atlanta Dream’s biggest remaining games from the bench. The star forward was assessed her eighth technical foul of the 2026 season during Friday night’s home game against the Portland Fire, putting her on track for an automatic one-game suspension that would sideline her for Sunday’s matchup with the Minnesota Lynx.

Reese picked up the technical in the fourth quarter after making contact with Portland’s Carla Leite. Under the WNBA’s rules, a player who reaches eight technical fouls in the regular season is automatically suspended for one game and fined $1,500, with an additional suspension for every two technicals after that.

The 24-year-old leads the league in technical fouls and has been the WNBA’s most-penalized player for much of the season.

There is still a path for Reese to play. The suspension only takes effect if the technical stands, and the league office can rescind it on review. Until that ruling comes down, the 7th overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft’s status for Sunday’s game will remain up in the air.

The timing could hardly be worse for Atlanta. Reese has been playing the best basketball of her season down the stretch, stacking double-doubles and closing in on the WNBA’s single-season rebounding record. Over one recent stretch she averaged 24 points, better than 11 rebounds, and nearly five assists a night as the Dream surged.

Atlanta sits at 25-14 and has already clinched a playoff berth for the fourth straight year, but the Dream are still fighting for seeding and home-court advantage. Sunday’s opponent makes the stakes clear. The Lynx own the league’s best record at 31-8 and loom as a possible playoff foe, making it the kind of measuring-stick game where the Dream would want their leading rebounder on the floor.

This is not new territory for Reese. She served a technical-related suspension last season while with the Chicago Sky, missing a game after reaching the same threshold, and was the only WNBA player suspended for technical fouls all year. A year later, in a new city and in the middle of a career-best run, she is again one league decision away from a night in street clothes.
