Islanders’ Tony DeAngelo signs $9 million extension with New York

The New York Islanders missed the playoffs for the second year in a row this past season, but they made strides in terms of where they want to be in the future. That means they have to start the work now, and they recently agreed to an extension with one of their key players, Tony DeAngelo.

The Islanders signed him to a two-year, $4.5 million extension, and it also comes with a limited no-trade clause.

DeAngelo worked his way to be one of the top defenseman alongside Adam Pelech on the Islanders last season, as he finished with five goals and 35 points while averaging 19:08 of ice time. He played in 76 games and closed with seven power-play points.

It also looked like DeAngelo wanted to break his own news.

The Islanders don’t seem to be done making moves anytime soon, and with the NHL Draft not too far away, they are apparently listening to trade calls on star forward Mathew Barzal. General manager Mathieu Darche may not make a move now, but it’s something that he’s keeping his eye on, according to Stefen Rosner of NHL.com.

“Given the market & teams missing out on top players, I’m told more teams have inquired about Isles’ Mathew Barzal, who holds a 22-team NTC,” Rosner wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Among those believed to have checked in: Dallas and Montreal. Darche’s job is to listen, so none of this should come as a surprise.”

If the Islanders want to take the next step, they know some changes are to come with the roster. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see a somewhat different team next season.
