How Yankees’ Jose Caballero just missed ‘Rickey Henderson-like’ game vs. Astros

As the New York Yankees have been clashing with the Houston Astros over the weekend, it has been a successful series for the team, featuring the continued impressive play from shortstop Jose Caballero, especially in Saturday’s 8-3 win. While Yankees manager Aaron Boone speaks on Caballero’s performance as of late, he would go as far as to compare the play of the 29-year-old to getting close to a Rickey Henderson-type level.

There’s no denying Henderson’s impact on baseball, especially with how he stole a lot of bases and his skill on the base path, with Caballero grabbing his 10th bag of the season, though he was caught stealing twice on Saturday. Caballero has been great recently at the plate, hitting a .377 batting average in his last 14 games to go along with three home runs and 10 RBIs.

Boone would speak on how much of a “tough out” Caballero is, and how he just missed having a Henderson-like game.

“Just a gritty, tough player. You kind of want him up there in certain situations. Back-to-back nights where he’s taken advantage of the Crawford Boxes, and he’s doing a good job of putting the ball in play the last couple of days,” Boone said, via MLB.com.

“[If] you’re going to take as many extra bases as he is, you’re going to get caught from time to time,” Boone continued. “Get that steal of third locked down, and it would have been a Rickey [Henderson]-like night.”

Caballero got another home run on Saturday in the top of the fifth inning, as though he’s been hitting at the bottom of the order, he’s performing at a high level. The 29-year-old looks to keep it going and impact New York all season.
