Yankees tie wild streak 34 seasons in the making

The New York Yankees are guaranteed a winning season once again. For the 34th season in a row, the American League East club has assured itself of a record of .500 or better, with the Yankees taking down the visiting Colorado Rockies, 5-3, in a series opener Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.

That is tied for the second-longest streak of winning seasons in MLB history, according to the game’s broadcast. Then again, New York still owns the record when the club went .500 or higher during an incredibly long stretch from the late 1920s to the early 1960s.

The last time New York finished a season with a losing record was in 1992.

The Yankees got it going in the Colorado game when Luis Garcia Jr.’s single drove Cody Bellinger to home plate on an error by the Rockies’ defense. Colorado tied the game at 1-1 with a solo home run from Adael Amador in the third inning. New York scored the next four runs on an RBI double by Ryan McMahon in the fifth inning and off a three-run blast from Heliot Ramos in the fifth and eighth innings, respectively.

Another interesting detail about the game is that it marked the return of New York superstar slugger Aaron Judge to the lineup. The three-time American League Most Valuable Player missed three months of action due to an injury to his ribs. The 34-year-old Judge went just 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

New York is still chasing the Tampa Bay Rays for the top spot in the AL East standings, as they improved to 82-62, 3.5 games behind in the race to the No. 1 position in the division.
