Mets’ Juan Soto surpasses former teammate Giancarlo Stanton with blast vs. Marlins

Juan Soto just passed his a former New York Yankees teammate on a home run list during Tuesday night’s showdown between the New York Mets and the Miami Marlins at LoanDepot Park in Miami.

In the top of the second inning, Soto stretched the Mets’ lead to 7-0 with a huge three-run home run that went 417 feet into the air on the first pitch he saw from Miami starter Sandy Alcantara.

With that home run, Soto passed Yankees slugger (and interestingly enough, former Marlins star) Giancarlo Stanton for ninth on the all-time MLB list of most homers by a player before turning 28 years old, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

“That’s Juan Soto’s 268th career home run, breaking a tie with Giancarlo Stanton for the ninth-most before turning 28 Mel Ott is next on the list in 8th, with 275,” Langs shared via a social media post on X (formerly Twitter).

This also continues Soto’s strong start in the Marlins series. He went 2-for-5 with two runs and a walk in the Mets’ 9-4 victory in the Miami series opener on Monday. Soto, who will turn 28 in October, entered Tuesday batting .276/.397/.525 for the season.

The Mets are going to need more than big blasts from Soto, however, if they are to finish the season with a much more respectable record.

Their odds of making the MLB playoffs are virtually zero, with their 66-78 record to start the day, 19 games off the top of the National League East standings. New York has been winning games lately, though, going 4-1 in the previous five outings, dating back to their series finale victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
