Grades for Baker Mayfield, Buccaneers contract extension
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers paid Baker Mayfield like an elite quarterback. That does not mean they made a mistake. It means the organization understands the cost of stability at the NFL’s most important position.
Mayfield agreed to a three-year, $165 million contract extension that keeps him in Tampa Bay through 2029. The $55 million annual average places him alongside several of the league’s highest-paid quarterbacks. The price creates risk for a 31-year-old coming off a down season, but allowing him to reach NFL free agency would have presented an even greater one.
The agreement also removes a major distraction before the season and ensures the Buccaneers will not enter another offseason negotiating from a weaker position.
Mayfield threw for 3,693 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions last season. Those numbers represented a clear decline from his career-best 2024 campaign, when he produced 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. Tampa Bay also finished 8-9 and missed the playoffs, giving the Buccaneers legitimate reasons to resist paying him at the top of the market.
One disappointing season, however, should not erase everything Mayfield has accomplished since arriving in 2023. He has thrown for 12,237 yards and 95 touchdowns across three seasons with the Buccaneers. He also led the franchise to two NFC South titles, two playoff appearances, and a postseason victory.
The Buccaneers did not possess an obvious succession plan. Undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels sits behind Mayfield, and asking him to become the long-term answer would represent an enormous gamble. Finding a comparable veteran in free agency would have been difficult, while trading up for a premium quarterback prospect could have cost multiple valuable draft picks.
The Buccaneers are paying Mayfield for more than statistics. He stabilized the franchise after Tom Brady retired, earned the confidence of the locker room, and gave the offense an identity. His aggressive style occasionally creates mistakes, but it also produces the decisive plays that helped revive his career.
The concern is whether the 2017 Heisman Trophy winner can justify a $55 million annual salary as he advances through his 30s. His 2025 regression cannot be ignored, especially because the deal may limit Tampa Bay’s ability to strengthen the roster around him. With $110 million in new guarantees reportedly included, the contract is a substantial long-term commitment rather than a headline figure the Buccaneers can easily escape.
Mayfield secured elite financial treatment without consistently performing as a top-five quarterback. Still, quarterbacks with his production, durability, and organizational value rarely become available. His grade reflects an outstanding result for the player.
Mayfield grade: A
The Buccaneers accepted a premium price to avoid quarterback uncertainty. It is not a bargain, but it is a defensible investment in a proven starter who has already succeeded in their system.
Buccaneers grade: B+
Ultimately, this deal represents a calculated bet on stability. Tampa Bay knows Mayfield is not Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen, but it also understands how difficult replacing a dependable starting quarterback can be. If Mayfield returns close to his 2024 form and keeps the Buccaneers in playoff contention, the $55 million annual price will look reasonable. If his decline continues, it could quickly become a burden. For now, both sides have achieved what they needed.
