Ravens’ Calais Campbell shares veteran wisdom before Week 1 clash vs. Colts

Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell is entering his 19th season in the NFL, and over the years, he has embraced being more of a vocal leader.

Campbell is in his second stint with the Ravens, and his key role in the locker room will not change, as many will look up to him for guidance. He has mentored numerous teammates, including safety Kyle Hamilton and defensive tackles Nnamdi Madubuike and Travis Jones, among others.

The Ravens will face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1, and the 40-year-old Campbell stressed the importance of staying even-keeled and focused.

“There are a lot of unknowns. We just haven’t been out there together in a situation that matters yet. So, frankly speaking, we have to go out there and establish our identity, and it does come from going out there and playing good football,” said Campbell in the video from FOX Baltimore’s Morgan Adsit.

“We can talk about what we want to be, but you have to go out there and execute it. There’s a lot to be determined. That comes about our leadership, trying to set the tone, and making sure we establish who we want to be early and often.”

The Ravens are in their first year under coach Jesse Minter and offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. Campbell maintained that while they need to adjust quickly, they should also temper their expectations.

“In this business, when you are a new system, the more time you get into it, you’re gonna get better. So I wouldn’t expect us to be at our very, very best in Week 1. It’s just unlikely. We’re gonna be better as we play more together,” added the six-time Pro Bowler.

Last season, Campbell logged 43 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, and two passes defended in 17 games for the Arizona Cardinals.

He signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Ravens in May.
