Hakeem Jeffries calls out Donald Trump for ‘ruining a good thing’ with Game 3 appearance

Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries blasted Donald Trump’s appearance at the NBA Finals in an interview on CNN. President Donald Trump is making headlines for attending Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, the first NBA Finals appearance for the Knicks since 1999.

Trump confirmed his appearance in media availability last week.

“The answer is yes,” Trump said. “[Dolan] has invited me, and I’m going. I’ll be there. It could be Monday. Maybe I’ll do both [Game 3 and Game 4]… “[The Knicks] find a way to do it. They’re really great, a great team. I’m happy for Jim [Dolan] because Jim has really been fighting hard to produce such a team.”

Due to his appearance, the Knicks announced on Saturday that there has been an enhanced security protocol. Fans aren’t allowed to bring bags and are encouraged to arrive at the game two hours early to be screened for entry. The traditional watch parties outside of Madison Square Garden for Knicks fans have also been canceled ahead of Trump’s appearance.

In the CNN interview, Jeffries predicted he wouldn’t receive a warm reception and that Trump’s appearance would ruin a historic run for the New York Knicks.

“I’m not sure it’s going to be a good reception for him,” Jeffries said during the interview, which aired on CNN. “But why does Donald Trump always have to ruin a good thing, like literally the Knicks haven’t been in the finals for 27 years, the city is trying to celebrate. We’re trying to embrace this and this guy has to inject himself.”
