Golden Knights star Mitch Marner closing in on shorthanded playoff history held by Wayne Gretzky

The Vegas Golden Knights are moving on in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Golden Knights eliminated the Anaheim Ducks in six games with a star performance from Mitch Marner. Marner racked up 11 points in the series against the Ducks.

In Game 6, he found the back of the net once, while also getting an assist on a shorthanded goal for the second time in the series. That shorthanded assist also put Marner in reach of history, according to Dan D’Uva, broadcaster for the Golden Knights.

Marner now has four shorthanded assists in the playoffs, joining Jari Kurri in 1983 and Mark Howe from 1989 with four shorthanded assists in the playoffs. He is also just one behind the playoff record of five shorthanded assists held by Wayne Gretzky in 1983. Gretzky played in 16 games in the playoffs that season, as the Oilers advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Meanwhile, Marner has played in just 12 games so far in the playoffs. He will get to 16 in the next series against the Colorado Avalanche. If he can add just one more shorthanded assist, he will join Gretzky. If the Golden Knights can advance to the Stanley Cup Finals, Marner will have plenty of chances to get there.

Meanwhile, Brett Howden scored the shorthanded goal from Marner. It was the third time this playoffs that Howden had found the back of the net shorthanded. He becomes just the second player in the last 29 years to have two shorthanded goals in the playoffs, and is now tied for the most in postseason history with seven other players.
