Golden Knights’ John Tortorella calls out ‘weird’ media response to controversial calls

The Vegas Golden Knights survived what was nearly an unthinkable collapse on Saturday night, taking Game 3 from the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in double overtime. The Golden Knights led 4-0 early in the third period before Carolina stormed back and nearly stole the game and the series lead.

One narrative that has been consistent during this Stanley Cup Final is that, in almost every game, there have been some controversial calls that are impacting the results. That was no different on Saturday, when Vegas had a pair of goals saved off on challenges in the second period.

After the game, Knights head coach John Tortorella commented on the calls and called out the media for what they said after an even bigger call in Game 2, via ESPN.

“I thought they made the right calls tonight,” Tortorella said. “The one the other night was wrong. I don’t know what you guys are all talking about. I’ve seen some of the weirdest stuff from you guys. If the puck isn’t covered and it goes in the net, it’s a goal.”

Tortorella is still upset about a call from Game 2 where it appeared Vegas had broken a 2-2 tie in the third period, but the officials ruled that Carolina netminder Frederik Andersen had covered the puck. He challenged the call and failed, leading to a Hurricanes power play that saw them take the lead late in regulation instead.

Still, despite all of that, Tortorella and company are in control of the series after a Shea Theodore game-winning goal in double overtime. Now, Vegas has a 2-1 lead in the series with another home game on the horizon and a chance to move ahead 3-1.

The Knights will be feeling very good about themselves considering, even in the game that they lost in this series, they were in control most of the way. While all three of the games have been very close, the Knights have had multi-goal leads in each of the last two games before letting their foot off the gas. If they can keep that up, they will be Stanley Cup Champions very soon.
