Gilbert Arenas recalls fearing ‘more Dwyane Wade’ after Shaq missed 2005 playoff games
Former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas recently looked back on the Washington Wizards’ difficult 2005 playoff matchup against Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat, recalling that the team was actually disappointed when Shaquille O’Neal missed games during the series.
Speaking on a recent episode of Gil’s Arena, Arenas reflected on the Wizards’ second-round loss to Miami and explained how Wade’s dominance became an even bigger concern once O’Neal was unavailable for Games 3 and 4 in Washington.
“I got swept in the 2nd round…. So, we played Chicago, you know we 4-2’d them right? And we thought we was ready for the Heat. We wanted that matchup. They was whooping our a** so bad that Shaq didn’t even come to D.C. They beat us so bad, he didn’t even show up. He was like ‘yeah y’all good without me.’ He didn’t show up for game 3 and 4. And Nobody in there was like ‘HELL YEAH.’ We were all like ‘(sigh) more Dwyane Wade?” Arenas said.

Dwyane Wade led Heat sweep without Shaq against Gilbert Arenas’ Wizards
The Heat completed a 4-0 series sweep over the Wizards in the 2005 Eastern Conference semifinals. Wade closed out the series with one of the best playoff performances of his early career in Game 4, finishing with 42 points, seven rebounds and two steals while shooting 13-for-22 from the field.
Miami ultimately advanced all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals before its playoff run ended in a seven-game loss against the defending champion Detroit Pistons. The following season, Wade and O’Neal helped lead the Heat to the first NBA championship in franchise history.
Arenas was one of the league’s top scorers during the mid-2000s and had helped guide Washington past the Chicago Bulls in the first round before facing Miami. However, the Wizards struggled to contain Wade throughout the series as the rising superstar continued establishing himself as one of the NBA’s premier guards.
