Giants rumors: Todd McShay drops No. 5 pick intel from John Harbaugh connections

The New York Giants have already had quite the offseason. New York brought in John Harbaugh at head coach and immediately started retrofitting the roster. Harbaugh has the chance to add a playmaker in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

NFL draft analyst Todd McShay shared some thoughts on how the Giants might use the fifth overall pick. McShay based his thoughts on intel he gained from sources who have worked with Harbaugh in the past.

“I actually reached out to two people who worked with John Harbaugh and been in draft rooms with him for years,” McShay said on Wednesday via The Rich Eisen Show. “And they kept saying, yeah he’ll love Downs, he’s going to love Styles, but there is something about finishing that offensive line, first pick. So they were leaning towards Mauigoa.”

New York will almost certainly have their pick of those three players at fifth overall.

McShay is not the first to suspect that the Giants may pick an Ohio State defender in the first round.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter shared the same theory on on NFL Live this week. There’s also Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft, where he heavily considered Styles and Carnell Tate before landing on Downs.

But Mauigoa is a new name for Giants fans to consider. He is widely regarded as the best offensive lineman in this year’s draft class. Mauigoa could slide in at right tackle right away in 2026, giving New York a pair of bookend tackles to build around.

Ultimately, the Giants look poised to land a talented player towards the top of the draft. It just depends where Harbaugh wants to improve the roster the most.

It will be exciting to see who New York actually picks in the draft next week.
