Florida State-SMU showdown delayed for odd reason

The Florida State Seminoles and the No. 19 SMU Mustangs waited a long time for their showdown in the 2026 season. They have to wait just a little longer after Florida State football’s home, Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, experienced a power outage.

“According to Andrea Adelson in Tallahassee, the game between Florida State and SMU is delayed because of a power outage,” Heather Dinich of ESPN reported. “The transformer on the west side of the stadium is out. They tried to reset the transformer, but were unsuccessful. Teams have returned to the locker room. An update is expected at 8:20 p.m. ET. Once power is restored teams will receive a 10-minute warmup period.”

The game was scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. (EST).

Of course, this is not a good look on Florida State, especially since this is the Seminoles’ first game of the season against an ACC opponent.

This also takes away some of the momentum Mike Norvell’s squad generated in Florida State football’s season-opening win over the New Mexico State Aggies, 34-17. That showdown against the Aggies also took place at Doak Campbell Stadium, and it didn’t experience the same type of technical issue that is wasting people’s time in the SMU game.

After two home games to start their season, Florida State will take on the No. 13-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide on Sept. 19 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. That means Florida State will have ample time to address any issues in its home stadium before the Seminoles return to the site for Sept. 25’s game against the Central Arkansas Bears.
