FBI forced to send warning about ‘illegal drone activity’ at Rockies’ Coors Field

Law enforcement agencies were in a frenzy trying to locate the individuals operating drones that were frequently spotted during the Colorado Rockies’ initial home games of the season against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Several drones above Coors Field earlier this month sent federal law enforcement on a chase. Over a half dozen drones were spotted above the stadium between Apr. 3 and 5 during the Rockies’ first home series against the Phillies. However, no one has been arrested yet.

A joint warning from the Federal Aviation Administration and the FBI was released Thursday, Apr. 16, 2026, advising against the use of drones at the stadium for the Rockies’ upcoming home games, citing security worries and the potential threat they pose.

“The illegal drone activity did not jeopardize anyone’s safety, but there were enough violations that the teams on the ground were concerned about the number of operators that did not seem to understand the seriousness of the situation. Thus the proactive messaging,” FBI spokesperson Vikki Migoya said in a statement (quotes via New York Post).

The FAA frequently imposes airspace restrictions around stadiums to protect spectators and guarantee uninterrupted gameplay.

Heightened fears of drone-related terrorist attacks have prompted the United States government to prioritize drone defense at sporting events. $500 million has been allocated for security at this summer’s World Cup host cities. “Every instance of illegal drone activity requires a law enforcement intervention to ensure the intent is not nefarious; the fewer violations there are, the more law enforcement can focus on what might be a true threat,” she said.

It is also to be noted that the airspace within 3 miles of Coors Field is restricted starting one hour before a game and continuing for one hour after a baseball or football game. Pilots are responsible for checking those restrictions. The FAA also stated that drone operators who violate the restrictions could face fines up to $75,000 per violation, as well as lose their licenses.
